Join Us for 28 Days of Stories

Flash Fiction February is a month-long, 100% free creative challenge.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

Write one piece of short (we mean it, SHORT) fiction every day in February.

"Flash fiction" refers to complete stories under 500 words. The goal of this challenge is to treat it like your "literary sketchbook."

We believe writers don't doodle enough to practice their craft and have fun with the written word, so this is an opportunity to explore your many awesome ideas while also practicing consistent creativity to overcome the daunting "start of a project" feeling.

We've set up 28 one-word prompts that will unlock daily in February. Register now to get your Welcome kit and join the private #flash-fic-feb channel in the Storytelling Collective Discord (and indicate you're there for Flash Fic Feb when prompted).

Our creative challenges are 100% FREE!

Donations help us cover the production costs required to publish our writers' work.

Participate in the challenge and your work will be published!

To celebrate your stories, Storytelling Collective's publishing imprint, Scribemind Books, will publish your work in a community anthology called In a Flash Volume III. Check out last year's collection:

At the end of the month, we'll open submissions and you can submit your favorite piece of flash fiction, to be published and promoted on DriveThruFiction.com, a platform for independent fiction authors.

This creative challenge is a great way to practice your craft, get to know your fellow writers, and earn a publishing credit!

Our 2025 theme: Octavia E. Butler

This year, our prompts are inspired by visionary science fiction author Octavia E. Butler.

Octavia E. Butler was a renowned African American author who received a MacArthur “Genius” Grant and PEN West Lifetime Achievement Award for her body of work. She was the author of several award-winning novels including PARABLE OF THE SOWER (1993), which was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and PARABLE OF THE TALENTS (1995) winner of the Nebula Award for the best science fiction novel published that year. She was acclaimed for her lean prose, strong protagonists, and social observations in stories that range from the distant past to the far future.

💡 The provided prompts are 100% optional, and you are not expected or required to use them for your fiction!
