Why write sword and sorcery?

There are several reasons to write sword and sorcery stories, particularly for beginners:

  • Sword and sorcery stories have clear genre elements and well-established tropes that can provide an easier framework for novice writers to start from

  • Sword and sorcery stories are sensational, full of over-the-top characters, lurid descriptions, and surprise twists. Beyond being fun, writing these kinds of stories can be a good way to practice character, description, pacing, and plot structure.

  • Writing sword and sorcery gives you an excuse to indulge your ferocious side by telling bloody, salacious stories set in a fictionalized prehistorical era

  • Creating new sword and sorcery stories can help breathe new life into this classic genre

This is a self-paced, activity-based course
